“Canadian Boxing Legend George Chuvalo Dies at 89”

George Chuvalo, the Canadian heavyweight boxer known for his iron chin and ability to withstand powerful punches throughout his career, has passed away at the age of 89. He had been battling dementia and was residing in a long-term care facility in Toronto before his death on Saturday, as confirmed by various online posts from family and friends.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford, a close family friend of Chuvalo, expressed his condolences on social media following the news of the boxer’s passing, offering sympathies to his family and loved ones.

Chuvalo made a name for himself in the boxing world by facing legendary fighters like Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, and George Foreman, never being knocked down despite absorbing their strongest blows. His remarkable durability in the ring contrasted with the immense personal tragedies he endured off it, losing three sons and a wife to drug addiction and suicide.

Born to Croatian immigrants in Toronto in 1937, Chuvalo’s boxing journey began at a young age, driven by a passion sparked when he first encountered The Ring magazine. Standing at six feet tall and weighing 210 pounds, he turned professional in 1956 after a notable amateur career and caught the attention of the boxing world with standout performances.

Under the guidance of manager Irv Ungerman, Chuvalo achieved significant victories, including a memorable 11th-round stoppage over contender Doug Jones at Madison Square Garden in 1964. His relentless fighting style, characterized by powerful blows and an impressive knockout rate, earned him respect in the boxing community.

Despite never winning a heavyweight title, Chuvalo’s toughness and resilience were widely recognized, particularly in his epic 15-round battle with Muhammad Ali in 1966. He retired from boxing in 1978 with a record of 73 wins, 18 losses, and two draws, with 64 of his victories coming by knockout.

Beyond his boxing career, Chuvalo faced personal struggles and losses, coping with the devastating impact of drug addiction within his family. Despite these challenges, he continued to advocate against drug abuse, sharing his experiences candidly to raise awareness among youth.

In his later years, Chuvalo’s legacy was honored by the City of Toronto with the establishment of the George Chuvalo Community Centre in the Junction area in 2019, recognizing his contributions to the sport and his enduring impact on the community.
