A 15-year-old boy was rescued by a fishing vessel after clinging to a capsized skiff in the frigid Bering Sea off Alaska for several days. Sadly, his brother and cousin didn’t survive the ordeal. The dramatic rescue took place near St. Lawrence Island, a remote location closer to Russia than the United States.
After the small boat overturned, the boy managed to hold on for nearly three days until he was spotted by a Coast Guard air crew. The fishing boat, The Northwest Explorer, swiftly responded to the distress call and successfully brought the boy to safety.
The brave teenager, wearing a bright yellow jacket, was seen kneeling on the overturned skiff during the rescue. He displayed symptoms of hypothermia upon boarding the fishing vessel, where the crew provided him with warmth using blankets and hot packs.
The Coast Guard had initiated the search after receiving reports of the missing trio. The group had set out from St. Lawrence Island with plans to return two days later. The names of the individuals involved have not been disclosed.
During the rescue operation, the boy informed the crew that his brother was trapped under the skiff, while his cousin had unfortunately passed away the night before their rescue. The captain of The Northwest Explorer, Adam White, commended the teenager’s resilience, describing him as “one tough kid.”
