FIFA President Gianni Infantino refrained from discussing his future plans as he attended the commencement of the Under-20 Women’s World Cup, facing ongoing scrutiny following the abandonment of his proposal to sell World Cup profits. During the opening day of the tournament on Saturday, Infantino engaged in conversation with Cezary Kulesza, the president of the Polish soccer federation, while watching the host nation Poland play against Argentina from the stands.
In response to queries about his intentions, Infantino stated that there would be a time and place to address the matter, emphasizing his current focus on enjoying the sport of football. He expressed FIFA’s dedication to promoting football globally and providing opportunities for all regions to enhance their involvement in the sport.
When questioned about the possibility of resigning or seeking re-election for a fourth term, Infantino chose not to respond. Following the setback of his World Cup commercialization plan due to opposition from FIFA member nations and internal dissent, Infantino had maintained a relatively low profile in recent weeks.
European nations, constituting a significant portion of the tournament participants, retracted their threat of boycotting the event after receiving assurances that the contentious proposal would not be revived. Legal disputes stemming from the initial plan are ongoing, with European entities spearheading attempts to remove Infantino ahead of the upcoming FIFA election.
Amidst allegations and legal actions, FIFA accused UEFA of orchestrating a defamatory campaign against FIFA leadership while seeking access to information related to the FIFA Forward Enterprise initiative. Infantino sparked global disapproval in July with his $20 billion subsidiary proposal, which aimed to control FIFA’s commercial rights, including those of the World Cup. The proposal, involving investors led by a New York fund, was swiftly retracted within days following widespread criticism from various soccer bodies and senior FIFA officials.
