“US Ambassador Condemns Settler Violence in West Bank”

The U.S. Ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, engaged with Palestinian Americans in Turmus Ayya, a town in the occupied West Bank that has been a target of settler violence. This meeting occurred amid growing international criticism of settler attacks and perceived inaction by the Israeli government. Although the Israeli government has condemned such violence, there is a lack of arrests and prosecutions of perpetrators.

Ambassador Huckabee, a supporter of Israeli settlements, labeled the violent settlers as terrorists and emphasized the need for prosecution. He stressed that the majority of settlers are not involved in violent acts. The West Bank, known as Judea and Samaria by the Israeli government, has witnessed increased settler violence and restrictions on Palestinian freedoms under Netanyahu’s right-wing coalition.

In Turmus Ayya, Mayor Nawwaf Zaghoul reported ongoing settler attacks, affecting the town’s predominantly U.S. citizen Palestinian residents. Huckabee highlighted the importance of addressing criminal behavior and terrorism by a small group of settlers damaging Israel’s reputation. He clarified that the U.S. Embassy lacks authority to take direct action but can raise awareness and advocate for necessary corrections.

Disagreements arose regarding the number of violent settlers, with a municipality spokesperson stating there are thousands involved. Despite differing perspectives, Palestinian Americans, including a woman whose husband was killed by settlers, expressed hope for U.S. government intervention to ensure residents’ safety. Several Palestinian Americans have tragically lost their lives in the West Bank due to violence since 2024.

Israeli settlements, including Shiloh near Turmus Ayya, have been a focal point of Huckabee’s visits. The ambassador’s efforts aim to address settler violence and promote peace in the region. The situation underscores the challenges faced by Palestinian communities amidst ongoing tensions and security concerns.
