A shooting incident in the North Spirit Lake First Nation, an Oji-Cree community in northwestern Ontario, has resulted in one fatality and one individual being taken into custody by the authorities.
After receiving a report of a disturbance in the community around 5 p.m. CT on Friday, the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS) promptly responded to the situation.
The NAPS confirmed that a male suspect is now under police custody, and residents can anticipate heightened police presence as investigations progress.
According to a news release issued by the police service on Friday night, there is currently no identified ongoing threat to public safety stemming from the incident. The North Spirit Lake community is home to approximately 430 residents and is situated about 530 kilometers northwest of Thunder Bay and 170 kilometers north of Red Lake.

While one individual is reported to be in stable condition, regrettably, another community member succumbed to their injuries.

This incident follows a shooting that occurred in Constance Lake First Nation in the early hours of August 29, where community members were advised to remain indoors during the investigation.
