The U.S. military confirmed its attack on three Iranian oil tankers in response to missile targeting of navy warships, emphasizing its readiness to eliminate Iran’s vulnerable oil fleet if necessary. The strikes mark a renewed escalation in the conflict following a six-month period of intermittent hostilities that began with U.S. and Israeli assaults on Iran in February. Both sides have been aiming to inflict military and economic harm, leading to a breakdown in negotiations.
According to the military’s announcement, a U.S. aircraft carrier and a destroyer successfully evaded multiple unprovoked Iranian assaults in the region without any harm to U.S. personnel. The statement indicated that two Iranian oil tankers were permanently incapacitated, while the third, which was empty, was destroyed. The U.S. asserted that the targeted tankers were linked to a clandestine network supporting Iran’s Revolutionary Guard and its regional armed allies.
Earlier reports from Iranian state TV mentioned that four U.S. missiles struck a tanker near Kharg Island, a critical oil export terminal. Kharg Island has been a frequent target during the conflict, including previous U.S. attacks on military installations there. Additionally, another tanker was hit near Jask, east of the Strait of Hormuz, and the unladen vessel was targeted in the Gulf of Oman.
The U.S. Central Command’s Admiral Brad Cooper reiterated the commitment to safeguard American forces and, if necessary, eliminate Iran’s exposed oil fleet. The recent attacks occurred following a temporary lull in hostilities, with renewed strikes targeting the strait and Iranian coastal areas. Earlier in the week, a U.S. bombardment in southern Iran resulted in casualties, including individuals at a wedding.
The latest confrontations followed increased U.S. economic pressures on Tehran, amidst Iran’s indication of defiance under new hard-line leadership. Negotiations regarding Iran’s nuclear program, a key issue leading to the conflict, collapsed shortly after the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the U.S. and Iran in mid-June. Tehran’s current focus is on controlling the strategically vital strait, essential for global oil and gas shipments, which has become a contentious point since the onset of the war.
While the U.S. military continues to assist ships navigating the strait amid Tehran’s assertiveness and targeting of select vessels, overall maritime traffic in the area remains limited.
