Republican lawmakers are voicing their support for President Donald Trump in the ongoing trade dispute with Canada, placing blame on Prime Minister Mark Carney’s administration for walking away from negotiations.
A group of GOP House members met with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer on Capitol Hill for discussions regarding tariffs. Despite concerns from some Republicans about the potential negative impact of escalating tariffs on their re-election chances in the upcoming midterms, many expressed solidarity with the president’s trade tactics after the meeting.
The reinvigorated trade war’s impact on border state economies poses a challenge for Republican candidates as the U.S. midterms approach, amidst online sparring between Ontario’s premier and the U.S. president.
Texas Representative August Pfluger commended Trump for his efforts to repatriate manufacturing jobs and pointed fingers at Ottawa for the trade conflict.
Pfluger stated, “Canada is driving this conflict. They need to be rational. They’ve been exploiting the U.S. for a long time.”
Brian Mast, a Florida Congressman serving his fifth term, also criticized Canada for the breakdown in negotiations.
Mast commented, “They were offered a highly favorable agreement, more generous than any other nation, which they rejected.”
Following the meeting, Greer refrained from responding to inquiries from the press regarding the status of talks with Canada.
Trump Criticizes Canadian Banking Policies
Meanwhile, at the White House, Trump reiterated his stance that Canada has unfairly benefited from trade with the U.S.
Trump highlighted one of his key grievances against Canada as the restrictions it imposes on American banks operating in their country.
