Ontario Premier Doug Ford revealed a sign for Lake Ontario in Winona on Saturday, countering United States President Donald Trump’s suggestion to rename it “Lake America” amidst intensifying tensions and trade disputes. Ford emphasized that the name “Lake Ontario” will endure, stating that despite Trump’s preferences, the world will always recognize it as such. The unveiling of the sign, emblazoned with “Lake Ontario Now and Always,” coincides with heightened tensions between the U.S. and Canada following failed trade negotiations on August 21. Prime Minister Mark Carney labeled the situation untenable, leading to the announcement of retaliatory measures set to commence on September 8.
The dispute escalated when Trump threatened to change the name of Lake Ontario during a verbal clash with Ford. Insults were exchanged, with Ford branding Trump a bully while Trump referred to Ford as a less charismatic version of his late brother, Rob Ford. Subsequently, Trump signed an executive order on Thursday to rename the lake “Lake America,” criticizing Canada for being challenging to work with and accusing the country of unfair trade practices.
In response, Canadian officials expressed disbelief on social media. Carney affirmed that Canadians will continue to refer to the body of water as Lake Ontario “now and always,” with Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston dismissing the situation as “foolishness.” Ford reiterated his commitment to defending Canadian sovereignty, stating that numerous governors have pledged to continue recognizing the body of water as Lake Ontario.
Ford emphasized the unity of Canada and vowed to protect the people of Ontario, referring to the province as the “engine of Canada.” Lake Ontario, one of the five Great Lakes situated between Ontario and New York, holds historical significance as the province of Ontario, established in 1867, derived its name from the lake. The name “Ontario” originates from the Huron Indigenous people’s term “oniatarÃ:io,” signifying “lake of shining waters.”
