“Lindsay Clancy Trial Highlights Maternal Mental Health”

CONTENT WARNING: The following article discusses acts of violence against children and suicide.

Supporters of Lindsay Clancy gathered outside a Massachusetts courtroom where she is standing trial for the deaths of her three children. Clancy admits to killing her children, but the jury must determine her level of criminal responsibility.

Prior to closing arguments on Thursday, the supporters, predominantly women dressed in pink, reiterated the need for better support for new mothers, echoing sentiments shared online and at previous gatherings.

Marta Quijano, a supporter and physician, highlighted the unfair dismissal of women’s concerns, stating, “I’ve been on both sides of this coin when women are dismissed for our concerns, and it’s not fair,” outside the Plymouth County Superior Court.

Danielle Buckley, who traveled from Maine to witness the closing arguments, emphasized the desire for justice for Clancy’s children.

The trial involves Clancy, 36, who stands accused of strangling her three children with exercise bands in 2023. She attempted suicide following the act, resulting in her paralysis. The defense acknowledges the killings but argues Clancy’s lack of criminal responsibility due to her bipolar disorder and postpartum psychosis.

Prosecutors contend that Clancy meticulously planned the murders to coincide with her husband’s absence. After the conclusion of closing arguments, the jury commenced deliberations.

If convicted, Clancy could face life imprisonment without parole or be committed to a state psychiatric facility if found not guilty by reason of insanity.
