Jamila Afelom, speaking about her daughter Fatin Ben Homar Azizi, emotionally recounted identifying her daughter’s body at a hospital, recognized only by a necklace she had given her. Fatin’s tragic demise occurred after her attempt to swim from Morocco to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. Afelom, in a video call from Tétouan, vividly shared the heart-wrenching details of discovering her daughter’s fate in late July.
Describing Fatin as bold, determined, and somewhat tomboyish, Afelom recalled her daughter’s love for soccer, a passion that led her to join various clubs in Tetouan. Coach Adel El Kaab, who fondly remembers Fatin as a younger sister, highlighted the challenges faced by female players in economically disadvantaged circumstances.
Despite El Kaab’s warnings about the risks associated with irregular migration paths, many of the girls he coached, including Fatin, pursued the hope of a better future in Europe. Fatin’s determination to seek a brighter future for her family drove her to attempt the dangerous journey to Ceuta, despite her mother’s attempts to dissuade her.
Afelom, a single mother working at a cemetery, shared the struggles of supporting her children in a harsh economic environment. Fatin’s resolve to escape poverty and uplift her family reflected the harsh realities faced by many young Moroccans living in challenging conditions.
The tragic end to Fatin’s journey underscored the dangers of irregular migration routes, with the Moroccan human rights organization AMDH reporting numerous fatalities among those seeking passage to Ceuta. Fatin’s family’s relentless search eventually led to the heartbreaking discovery of her body in a Fnideq hospital.
The sorrowful fate of Fatin and the plight of other migrants attempting the perilous journey to Ceuta highlight the urgent need for intervention to prevent further tragedies. Despite the dreams of a better life driving many young Moroccans to seek opportunities in Europe, the harsh realities of migration risks and economic disparities continue to claim lives and devastate families.
