The head of corrections in Newfoundland and Labrador has been removed from their position following the uncovering of financial and administrative irregularities at Her Majesty’s Penitentiary. The province has initiated an internal review into the financial and administrative procedures at the correctional facility located in St. John’s.
The Department of Justice and Public Safety informed CBC News on Tuesday about the identification of financial and administrative irregularities at Her Majesty’s Penitentiary. They emphasized the seriousness of the situation, leading to immediate action being taken.
Dan Chafe, who has been the Superintendent of Prisons in the province since 2020, overseeing several correctional facilities, is no longer in his previous role. Susan Green, the former provincial manager of institutional programs, has assumed the role of acting Superintendent of Prisons since her appointment on August 12.
The Department of Justice and Public Safety has involved the Office of the Comptroller General in the review process and anticipates the findings. Additionally, they have informed the Office of the Auditor General, although the auditor general’s office declined to comment on audit requests when approached by CBC News.
Despite CBC News’ attempt to reach out for comment via his government email, Chafe did not respond immediately.
