“13-Year-Old Sets New World Record in Tuna Fishing”

Off the coast of Nova Scotia, a 13-year-old girl achieved a new world record in tuna fishing at the 22nd annual Wedgeport Tuna Tournament and Festival. Délynn Jacquard, aboard the Pelagic Predator, reeled in a 711-pound catch, potentially setting a new International Game Fish Association female junior world record. This feat surpasses the previous record of 618 pounds set by Jenna Gavin 12 years ago in Ballantynes Cove.

Jacquard reflected on her accomplishment, admitting initial doubts about her ability but ultimately feeling proud of her achievement. It took her just over an hour to bring the tuna in, describing the process as physically demanding and requiring precise technique.

Her father, Camille Jacquard, who captains the Pelagic Predator, has been participating in the tournament for around two decades. Despite her success, Délynn remains uncertain about returning for future tournaments.

Brandon Doucette, a tournament board member, anticipates it may take up to six months for the record to be officially recognized, emphasizing the confidence in its verification. He explained the technicalities of record verification, highlighting the difference between IGFA standards and the tournament’s criteria for weighing the catch.

In a remarkable turn of events, another vessel, Lucas & Noah, captained by Brent Pothier, landed an 801-pound bluefin tuna during the same event, breaking the tournament’s previous record. Doucette expressed immense excitement over the unprecedented achievements in the tournament’s history.

The Wedgeport Tuna Tournament holds significant historical and community value, with a rich tradition of hosting anglers from around the world. Doucette emphasized the event’s cultural importance and its role in celebrating the community’s heritage.

All tuna caught during the tournament falls within the region’s commercial quota, ensuring that the fish will be utilized for consumption. The event not only sets records but also contributes to the local economy through the distribution of the catch to restaurants and households.
