“Canadian Honey Farm Faces Bankruptcy Amid US Tariff Dispute”

Osee Podolsky, the general manager of Podolski Honey Farms, expressed concern that the imposition of a 50 percent tariff by the United States on $28 billion worth of Canadian goods, including natural honey, could potentially lead to bankruptcy for the family business in Ethelbert, Manitoba, which predominantly sells honey to U.S. customers.

Podolsky highlighted that approximately 90 percent of the honey produced by the Ethelbert company is typically destined for the U.S. market, making it financially unfeasible to continue exports under the current tariff conditions.

As a result of the failed trade negotiations, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada decided to walk away from the talks due to unreasonable demands made by the U.S., including contentious issues related to French language protections and restrictions on future trade agreements.

In response to the U.S. tariffs, Canada plans to implement retaliatory tariffs commencing after Labour Day, matching the U.S. tariffs dollar-for-dollar.

Small businesses like Podolski Honey Farms are feeling the impact of the trade dispute, with Podolsky stating that they are now focusing on fulfilling Canadian contracts while evaluating their financial outlook for the upcoming months.

Loren Remillard, the President and CEO of the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce, expressed disappointment over the tariffs and emphasized the importance of Canada standing firm in negotiations to secure a favorable trade deal with the U.S.

Mayor Larry Johannson of Selkirk voiced concern over the impact of the tariffs on the steel industry, a key employer in the city, and called for increased trade opportunities within Canada and with other international markets.

Osee Podolsky highlighted the mutual benefits of Canada-U.S. trade for beekeepers on both sides of the border, emphasizing the need for a resolution to the tariff dispute to maintain the positive trade relationship.
