Brooke Henderson is in contention at the CPKC Women’s Open in Edmonton, with room to make a move in the upcoming rounds. The defending champion, hailing from Smiths Falls, Ontario, is aiming for her third victory in Canada’s LPGA event and carded a 68 in the second round to be at 5-under par.
Currently, Henderson trails the South Korean leader, Soo Bin Joo, by four strokes, who sits at 9 under after the second round at the Royal Mayfair Golf Club in Edmonton. Despite being at 7 under earlier in the round, Henderson encountered some challenges with two bogeys on the back nine, one of which resulted in her tee shot hitting a spectator. Henderson promptly apologized and offered a golf ball to the individual.
Aphrodite Deng from Calgary, who was the top amateur in last year’s tournament in Mississauga, finished her round strongly with consecutive birdies, posting a 67 to reach 3 under. The tournament’s cut line for the top 65 players and ties will determine who advances further in the $2.75 million US event. Canadian youngsters Anna Huang from Vancouver and Michelle Xing from Richmond Hill, Ontario, who started the day three shots off the lead at 5 under, had afternoon tee times.
