The mascots, Dez the snapping turtle and Dot the Arctic hare, symbolize different speeds, drawing inspiration from Aesop’s fable about a race between the two animals. Despite their contrasting personalities, they both represent the sole WNBA team in Canada.
Dez, hailing from Muskoka, is depicted as composed and enjoys music, soft-shell tacos, and is a Taurus. On the other hand, Dot, named after Toronto’s moniker T-Dot, is portrayed as energetic, fond of cotton candy, the Netflix F1 series “Drive to Survive,” and is a Gemini. Their unique connection blossomed when Dot followed the northern lights to Dez’s territory, realizing they complemented each other perfectly.
“The two quickly discovered a shared love of rhythm — even if they approached it very differently. Dez brought patience and timing; Dot brought speed and fearless energy,” the Tempo stated in a news release. Eventually, the vibrant atmosphere of Toronto drew them both to the city.
However, the reception from the local community has been less than enthusiastic towards the new mascots. Some critics have expressed disappointment in the design and concept, comparing them unfavorably to the Toronto Raptors’ mascot, the Raptor.
While some find the mascots’ faces disconcerting, others appreciate the unique tortoise and hare dynamic, with one Facebook user noting the clever imagery. Despite criticisms, some fans have shown support, with one Reddit user expressing a willingness to support the mascots.
Speculation has arisen about the nature of Dez and Dot’s relationship, including rumors about their dating status. However, according to TSN Toronto Tempo beat reporter Chelsea Leite, the mascots are simply best friends and not involved romantically.
The Tempo, facing a challenging season with a 10–25 record and a 12-game losing streak, were eliminated from playoff contention after a recent defeat to the Washington Mystics. The franchise is hopeful that the new mascots will bring them luck in future games.
