Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that Russian ballistic missiles caused casualties and damage in Kyiv, resulting in at least three deaths and 20 injuries. The attack, which occurred early on Thursday, left parts of the Ukrainian capital without power as buildings were hit.
One of the missiles struck the upper floors of a nine-story residential building, igniting a fire. Residents were trapped in various locations as the strikes targeted apartments, non-residential buildings, warehouses, and even a children’s hospital, according to Klitschko’s communication on the Telegram messaging app.
Witnesses heard over a dozen explosions, with another person confirmed dead in the region near Kyiv, as reported by a local official on Telegram.
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, both countries have been exchanging attacks on a daily basis. Despite diplomatic efforts involving the United States and Europe, a lasting ceasefire has not been achieved.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine had presented proposals to end the conflict to U.S. negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner earlier this month. However, the negotiators, who visited Moscow in January, have not yet visited Kyiv.
Although Russia has not received specific proposals for potential new meetings with U.S. negotiators, Maria Zakharova, the spokesperson for Russia’s foreign ministry, mentioned in the Izvestia newspaper that Moscow is willing to organize a meeting promptly if required.
Ukraine hammered targets in Russia on Saturday, including Moscow, with hundreds of drones in one of its biggest attacks of the war so far, demonstrating its increasing ability to match Russia in long-range strikes.
