“Tugboat Wilkinson Makes MLB Debut with Giants”

Matt “Tugboat” Wilkinson got his nickname in Little League due to his lack of speed on the bases. Fast forward to present day, and Tugboat is making his MLB pitching debut with the San Francisco Giants after a call-up from their triple-A affiliate. His first start was announced for Wednesday against the Cleveland Guardians.

Jeff Duda, Wilkinson’s former coach at the Okotoks Dawgs Academy in Alberta, received the exciting news directly from Tugboat himself in a late-night phone call. Wilkinson expressed his shock and excitement about the call-up, which was evident in his voice, according to Duda.

Wilkinson’s pitching talent was evident from a young age when he led White Rock to the 2015 Canadian Little League title at just 12 years old. He made a mark on the mound by striking out 16 batters in Canada’s opening game at the Little League World Series. In a recent appearance at the World Baseball Classic, he showcased his skills by pitching 2.2 scoreless innings and striking out notable hitters like Cal Raleigh and Bryce Harper.

Despite not fitting the typical mold of a major-league pitcher at 6-1 and 250 pounds, Wilkinson’s strong work ethic and competitive drive set him apart. His former coach praised his determination and continuous improvement each season.

Selected by the Cleveland Guardians in the 10th round of the 2023 MLB draft, Wilkinson was traded to the Giants in May. This move sets the stage for him to face his former team in his Major League debut. With an impressive record of 96 strikeouts in 90 innings and a 3.40 ERA in 20 minor league starts this season, fans are eagerly anticipating his performance at the highest level.

Supporters in Canada are excited to see Wilkinson reach this milestone in his career. Jordan Broatch, director of baseball operations at the White Rock South Surrey Baseball Association, commended Wilkinson for consistently showcasing his talent and dominating on the field. Duda expressed his belief in Wilkinson’s potential to reach the big leagues and praised his journey to this point.
