A tragic incident occurred on an early Sunday morning in Hungary when a passenger bus carrying Polish tourists veered off the highway near Mezokeresztes, overturning in a ditch and resulting in the death of 12 individuals with several others sustaining injuries. The accident took place on the M3 motorway, approximately 140 kilometers east of Budapest, at around 1 a.m.
Authorities revealed that the bus driver, who is suspected to have fallen asleep at the wheel, has been apprehended. The Hungary National Directorate for Disaster Management disclosed that the bus, which was transporting 57 passengers and two drivers, caused several passengers to be trapped beneath it following the overturn.
In a statement, the Polish Foreign Ministry spokesperson confirmed that all passengers aboard the bus held Polish citizenship. The travelers, hailing from the southeastern Podkarpackie region, were returning from a pilgrimage in Bosnia-Herzegovina, as reported by the regional government in Rzeszow, Poland.
Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and commended the efforts of the rescue teams deployed to the site. Meanwhile, Polish President Karol Nawrocki conveyed his deep sorrow for the tragic incident, offering prayers and sympathy to the affected families and loved ones.
