Serita Thurton netted two goals in the opening half as the Calgary Wild, sitting at the bottom of the standings, caused an upset by defeating the Ottawa Rapid, who lead the league, with a score of 4-3 during a Northern Super League match held at McMahon Stadium on Saturday.
Kahli Johnson struck first for the hosts in the 15th minute, putting them ahead 1-0, followed by Thurton extending the lead to 2-0 about 13 minutes later.
Ottawa’s Jung Min-Young found the net in the 38th minute, and Melanie Forbes equalized at 2-2 just a minute into stoppage time in the first half.
Thurton secured her second goal just before halftime, propelling the Wild to victory. Jorian Baucom also contributed a goal for the Wild, who now have a record of two wins, 12 losses, and two draws.
Jyllissa Harris managed to score on a penalty kick in the 86th minute for the Rapid, who now have 10 wins, three losses, and three draws, seeing their 10-match unbeaten streak come to an end.
Despite controlling 54% of possession, the Rapid were outshot 16-13 (with 9 shots on target to 6).
The Wild earned six out of the 11 corners in the game, while Ottawa received one yellow card and one red card.
In another match titled “Rise edge Tides,” Jessica De Filippo scored in the 57th minute to level the game and then netted a second goal five minutes into stoppage time in the second half, leading the Vancouver Rise to a 2-1 victory over the Halifax Tides at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, B.C.
Jordyn Rhodes gave the fourth-place Tides a 1-0 advantage with a goal in the 19th minute.
The fifth-place Rise controlled 56% of possession and outshot the Tides 18-13, with a 6-4 advantage on target.
Halifax took four of the six corners in the game, while Vancouver received two of the three yellow cards issued.
