Summer McIntosh from Toronto commenced her events at the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Irvine, Calif., with a noteworthy performance in the women’s 200-meter freestyle. The 19-year-old, participating in the competition for the first time, secured a second-place finish in a time of 1 minute 53.86 seconds. Lani Pallister of Australia clinched the gold medal with a championship-record time of 1:53.67, while Erika Fairweather of New Zealand claimed third place with a time of 1:55.05.
Reflecting on her race, McIntosh expressed a desire for a faster start and acknowledged areas for improvement in her turns. Despite the slight disappointment, she remains focused on her long-term goal of winning at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
During the race, Pallister initially led McIntosh by a small margin, but the Canadian surged ahead at the halfway mark. However, Pallister reclaimed the lead in the final stretch to secure the victory.
McIntosh, a dominant force in multiple swimming disciplines, including the 200 butterfly, 200 IM, 400 free, and 400 IM, has been steadily preparing for the Pan Pacific Championships. She recently set new records in the 200 fly at the Canadian trials, showcasing her determination and resilience.
In a separate event, Saskatoon’s Blake Tierney emerged victorious in the men’s 100m backstroke, claiming his first international gold medal. Tierney’s impressive time of 53.18 seconds propelled him to the top of the podium, highlighting his dedication to training and competitive spirit.
Taylor Ruck, a seasoned swimmer hailing from Kelowna, also made her mark at the championships, securing bronze medals in the women’s 50m butterfly and 100m backstroke events. Ruck set a new Canadian record in the 50m butterfly, demonstrating her prowess in the pool.
The Canadian team further showcased its talent in the 4×100 medley relay, with Ruck, Ingrid Wilm, Oliver Dawson, and Finlay Knox delivering a strong performance to secure the bronze medal.
