Embark on a Culinary Adventure: How to Discover the Best Eats on Your Road Trip
When I hit the road, my main agenda isn’t ticking off landmarks or tourist spots — it’s all about exploring eateries, cafes, and bakeries. For me, the highlight of any journey is sampling new flavors, and some of my most cherished memories revolve around the delectable dishes I’ve savored along the way. (Although finding an appetite between meals can be a challenge, that’s where sightseeing attractions come in handy.)
Road trips are a paradise for food enthusiasts: you get to cover vast distances, craft your own timetable (and sneak in last-minute reservations), and, since you’re behind the wheel, you can easily stop for all kinds of roadside treats (hello, fresh produce stands!).
However, to execute this gastronomic adventure successfully, meticulous planning is essential. Over my travels, I’ve fine-tuned my strategy for discovering the finest food offerings. So, to assist you in pinpointing the most delectable stops on your summer road trips, I’m sharing my approach.
Conduct Thorough Research and Cross-Check
Upon finalizing my travel destination, I adopt a three-pronged strategy for food exploration that can be accomplished in as little as half an hour.
Firstly, I conduct an initial online search for reliable articles and restaurant guides about the area (check out platforms like CBC, Frommer’s, Maclean’s, Condé Nast Traveler, and Eater). This serves as a great starting point, providing insights into the region you’re visiting and its culinary specialties.
Next, I delve into TikTok and Instagram, using search terms such as “best Halifax restaurants,” “best food in Halifax,” and “Halifax food.” If you have a specific craving, narrow down your search, like “best lobster in P.E.I.” or “best Jewish deli in Montreal.”
Lastly, I seek personal recommendations by reaching out to friends or posting on social media. Nothing beats a suggestion from a trusted source.
After gathering information, I look for commonalities among the recommendations — the sweet spot where multiple independent sources mention the same eatery or dish. This is where culinary magic unfolds! You’d be surprised how frequently this alignment occurs once you start investigating. (This is how I stumbled upon the most heavenly deep-fried chicken wings at Phnom Penh while exploring Vancouver, a memory that still lingers.)
Strike a Balance with Ratings
While not an exact science, analyzing simple metrics from a restaurant’s Google reviews can offer insights into what to expect. Yelp and Tripadvisor are also valuable resources, but I prefer Google due to the abundance of reviews.
As a rule of thumb, I tend to skip places rated below 4.1 stars. This doesn’t imply that lower-rated establishments serve subpar food, but I prefer to play it safe while traveling to avoid disappointments.
Consider the restaurant’s rating count:
– 10,000+ ratings = likely a tourist trap with tasty fare or a good ambiance, but exercise caution.
– 5,000-10,000 ratings = a tourist staple, offering popular and established dishes, though not necessarily unique.
– 1,000-5,000 ratings = a local favorite, offering less touristy options with carefully curated culinary experiences.
– 1,000 or fewer ratings = potential hidden gem, ideal for discovering new and emerging spots. Dive into reviews for a better sense of the place.
Note: Adjust this system for smaller or lesser-known locations you may pass through.
Embrace the Unexpected
No amount of planning can account for the serendipitous discoveries en route. Leave room for spontaneous moments.
If you chance upon a charming town, take a pit stop on its main street. Walk around, stretch your legs, and you might stumble upon a hidden culinary gem.
In rural areas, watch for homemade signs advertising fresh produce or baked goods. These off-the-grid treats, unlisted on map apps, often hold unique appeal.
One of my most cherished memories from driving through Ontario’s Prince Edward County involves spotting a sign for butter tarts outside a roadside shed. I stumbled upon the most delectable butter tarts in exquisite pink packaging. It felt like a dream! Though Waupoos Tarts has since garnered online acclaim, the thrill of discovering them independently remains unmatched.
Ease the Pressure and Avoid Hangry Eating
While I strive to savor the best culinary experiences while traveling, I’ve learned to prevent hunger-induced frustration.
Carrying light snacks can alleviate hunger pangs when you miss a turn or realize your destination is farther than anticipated. Don’t let the pursuit of perfection ruin your vacation. Shelf-stable snacks like granola bars and trail mix are convenient, but I enjoy stocking up on unique road trip treats like beef jerky or childhood candies for a fun twist.
Additionally, indulge in regional specialties or seasonal fruits along the way.
