Two years after a fatal ambulance crash, the families of two elderly victims are still seeking answers. Despite the driver admitting fault, families of Jane Blampied and Anthony Dawbarn remain frustrated. The driver, Julie Ijere, avoided jail time but was sentenced to a suspended 20-month imprisonment and a five-year driving ban. Detective Inspector Dave McCormack acknowledged the families’ patience but noted the lack of closure due to the unclear cause of the crash.
The incident occurred when Ijere’s ambulance veered into oncoming traffic, colliding with Ms. Blampied’s vehicle. Tragically, Mr. Dawbarn, a passenger in the ambulance, succumbed to injuries days later. Ijere admitted guilt for causing the deaths through careless driving, as confirmed by CCTV and dashcam footage. Investigations ruled out distractions or phone usage as contributing factors, despite Ijere being on medication. Victim impact statements emphasized the profound loss experienced by both families.
In addition to her legal consequences, Ijere must perform unpaid work, undergo a rehabilitation program, and pay fines. The families continue to seek closure and justice for their loved ones.
