A stadium initially meant for Olympic athletes has been repurposed into an emergency refuge to accommodate dogs rescued from raging wildfires in Greece. Harsh weather conditions and strong winds reaching speeds of up to 78mph have caused wildfires to spread throughout the Attica region surrounding Athens.
Despite the challenges, hundreds of firefighters have been tirelessly fighting the fires that have destroyed homes in Porto Germeno and Psatha villages. Volunteers at the Megara Olympians Municipal Stadium have transformed a running track into a temporary shelter for dogs affected by the disaster.
Over 110 dogs have found safety at the stadium, receiving care from veterinarians to ensure their well-being. Some of the rescued dogs are strays, while others still wear their owners’ collars. Charities have expressed concerns about the impact of the fires on wild animals like horses and deer in Greece.
Recent data shows that the Attica region has lost 42% of its forests to wildfires over the past decade. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis emphasized the importance of supporting natural regeneration in burnt forests, particularly those with Aleppo pine trees prevalent in Attica.
Authorities have reported 33 arrests related to starting fires in Greece, with most cases attributed to negligence during activities like welding despite bans. Aerial support, including planes and helicopters, has been deployed to contain the fires, with efforts led by the Greek Firefighters Association aiming for daily progress in firefighting operations.
