A 9-year-old girl named Minnie Merriman has passed away after being discovered injured in Arbroath. The young student was found with severe injuries at the Elliot Industrial Estate shortly after midnight on Monday. She was quickly transported to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee but unfortunately succumbed to her injuries shortly after her arrival.
Following the incident, three other individuals were taken to the hospital for treatment and were later discharged. Law enforcement authorities have arrested and charged a 35-year-old man in connection with the girl’s death. Reports from the Daily Record indicate that the man, who is acquainted with Minnie, is set to appear in court today.
According to the police, Minnie and the arrested man had a known relationship. The family of the deceased girl, who had been camping in the area and hailed from West Yorkshire, released a statement expressing their devastation over the loss of their beloved Minnie Merriman. They have requested privacy during this challenging time.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding Minnie’s death are ongoing. Witnesses have reported seeing the family cooking on a camping stove hours before the tragic incident. Additionally, another observer mentioned seeing a tent set up near a car, describing it as an unusual setup.
The industrial estate where the incident occurred, situated amidst a residential area, retail park, and Arbroath seafront, is a bustling location. Although two caravan sites are nearby, neither of them claims to have hosted the girl and her family prior to the tragedy.
Local resident Bill Smith expressed shock and sadness over the incident, highlighting the community’s disbelief and sorrow at the loss of a young life in their midst. He mentioned the busy foot traffic in the area during the day, connecting various points of interest.
Authorities have established a significant cordon around the crime scene for investigative purposes. A blue electric Peugeot vehicle, with its windshield covered and rear view blocked by a blanket, was cordoned off. Additionally, a blue forensic tent was erected at the site.
Detective Inspector Mike Ness of the Major Investigation Team extended sympathies to all affected by the events, particularly Minnie’s family. The police presence will be maintained in the area as inquiries progress.
