Andy Burnham has shared that his wife needed convincing for him to pursue the position of Prime Minister and had previously jokingly criticized his responses in interviews. The new PM disclosed that his wife, Marie-France van Heel, initially reacted with skepticism, expressing her candid opinions on his political setbacks.
Speaking on the How to Fail with Elizabeth Day podcast, Burnham, the Makerfield MP, also recounted the touching moment when care staff at his father Roy’s Alzheimer’s care home showed him footage of his visit to Downing Street.
When asked about his wife’s response to his aspirations, which led to him taking over from Keir Starmer as leader, Burnham mentioned, “It’s why I find this podcast easy because she’s quite blunt in telling me about my failures in past endeavors and she doesn’t hold back and there’s no soft landing there.”
He shared, “Yeah, she was like, ‘What? Not again. They told you twice they don’t want you. Why are you doing it again?’ No, we’ve always just had honest conversations about it.”
Burnham admitted that it took some persuasion to convince his wife, as she was concerned about the potential outcome of his decision. Despite her initial reservations, she offered valuable advice and support.
Reflecting on his wife’s straightforward feedback on his interviews, Burnham recalled her direct messages urging him to “Answer the f***ing question” after his appearances dating back to the early 2000s.
Additionally, Burnham emotionally recounted a heartwarming incident at his father’s care home, where staff arranged for Roy to watch footage of Burnham at Downing Street, hoping he would recognize his son in his new role as Prime Minister.
