More students will now have the opportunity to enjoy discounted train fares as the eligibility for railcards is expanded. The 16-17 Saver Railcards will now be valid for a full year from the purchase date, allowing young individuals to benefit from the discount until the day before their 19th birthday. This change, effective from August 17, enables students to obtain a new railcard until the day before they turn 18, ensuring a full 12 months of discounted travel.
Priced at £35 annually, the 16-17 Saver Railcards, available to students and trainees, offer a 50% discount on rail tickets, easing the financial burden of commuting to school, college, or work. The Department for Transport highlighted that previous regulations led to over 70,000 students missing out on the maximum discount of £175 annually compared to their peers.
Transport expenses often pose challenges for young people entering the workforce. By expanding access to discounted rail fares and introducing a £2 bus fare cap next year, initiatives like these aim to facilitate more opportunities for young individuals.
Lord Peter Hendy, the Rail Minister, expressed pride in the positive impact of these changes, emphasizing the importance of making travel more affordable for teenagers pursuing education or entering the job market. These adjustments align with the vision for Great British Railways, focusing on creating a more user-friendly and cost-effective railway system.
These modifications coincide with various fare and ticketing reforms preceding the introduction of Great British Railways. Innovations such as Pay-As-You-Go contactless options and trials for digital ticketing outside of London are being expanded to regions like Manchester, Yorkshire, and the East and West Midlands.
Plans are also in progress to launch a GBR website and app, serving as a comprehensive platform for passengers to purchase tickets, check train schedules, and claim Delay Repay compensation.
The updated rules for the 16-17 Saver Railcard align it with other youth railcards, allowing passengers to purchase the 26-30 Railcard until the day before their 31st birthday, which remains valid for a full year.
Jacqueline Starr, from the Rail Delivery Group, highlighted the benefits of extending the savings period for young individuals and the flexibility it offers in utilizing rail travel discounts during important educational stages.
