Silver Dollar City, a well-known theme park located in the Ozark Mountains of southwestern Missouri, has announced the closure of its Thunderation roller coaster in January 2027. The park, which first welcomed visitors in 1966 between the towns of Branson and Branson West, has grown over the years to offer more than 40 rides and seven roller coasters.
Introduced in 1993, the Thunderation roller coaster takes riders on a journey through a simulated 1880s mine, standing at an impressive 80 feet tall and reaching speeds of 48 miles per hour. It has become a favorite attraction at the theme park, but its last day of operation will be on January 2, 2027.
While Silver Dollar City has hinted at new attractions in the works, no official explanation has been given for the closure of the ride. To commemorate the roller coaster, a range of memorabilia including T-shirts, hats, and mugs has been made available for purchase.
In a similar vein, Fun Spot America in Atlanta, Georgia, originally known as Dixieland Fun Park when it opened in 1990, is also preparing to close its doors for the final time on August 2. This news coincides with a trend of popular theme parks in the US shutting down.
