A significant wildfire is currently burning close to a major UK nuclear facility, Sizewell B, having expanded to the size of 140 football fields. Firefighters have been combating the destructive Dunwich fire in Dunwich Heath, Suffolk, for nearly a day, with the blaze now covering an area of 100 hectares or 247 acres. Suffolk Fire and Rescue have mobilized 18 fire engines to manage the situation and anticipate another 36 hours of firefighting efforts to prevent the fire from reaching the sprawling nuclear complex in Suffolk.
Smoke columns have been observed rising near Sizewell B, prompting officials to reassure the public that the situation is under close observation by EDF, the operators of the plant. Sizewell B, which started operations over 30 years ago, is equipped with a pressurized water reactor, a common type of reactor that employs liquid and steam to produce electricity. The power generated by Sizewell B can supply every home in Suffolk for nearly two centuries and meets around three percent of the UK’s electricity needs.
Despite the ongoing wildfire near Sizewell B and the neighboring Sizewell C under construction, plant authorities have confirmed that there is no immediate threat. Emergency plans are in place at Sizewell B to handle various scenarios, including fire incidents. While the wildfire continues to spread, both sites are closely monitoring the situation and ensuring the safety of personnel. Sizewell C officials have emphasized that the blaze poses minimal risk to their operations due to the distance between the site and the fire, with a focus on monitoring smoke levels and road conditions to maintain safety protocols.
