A man who used to work at a gas station and won $28 million (£22.4m) with a 40p lottery ticket has shared his experience of the challenges that came with his Powerball win. Timothy Schultz, residing in Iowa, USA, mentioned that while most of his close circle remained supportive after his big win, not everyone treated him the same way.
This revelation coincided with the UK debut of the American lottery game Powerball, operated by Alwyn, which allows UK residents to participate in the world’s largest rolling lottery. The recent draw, open to players from both the UK and the US, featured a massive jackpot of £343 million. Powerball winners have the option to claim their substantial prizes in installments over thirty years, with tickets priced starting at £4 per line.
Despite the allure of a life-changing windfall, Timothy, who was only 21 when he became a millionaire in 1999, highlighted an unexpected downside. He recounted being inundated with requests for financial assistance from strangers shortly after his win, which he found overwhelming. He cautioned that lending money could strain even the closest friendships.
Timothy’s cautionary tale about the challenges of sudden wealth has been consistent over the years. In a 2022 interview with Fox, he reiterated receiving numerous requests for money, leading him to feel like a walking cash dispenser. Consequently, he found it difficult to trust people and was cautious of those who might have ulterior motives in befriending him.
Despite being young when he struck it rich, Timothy’s initial major purchase was not a lavish mansion or car but a Nintendo 64, a luxury he couldn’t afford on his previous modest income. Rather than disappearing into obscurity, he has since become a journalist using his YouTube channel, Dreams & Fortune, to raise awareness about the impacts of life-altering lottery wins, engaging with fellow winners.
For future UK Powerball winners, Timothy’s advice is straightforward: “Live within your means.” Reflecting on his journey, he shared that if he could speak to his younger self, he would say, “Buckle up,” acknowledging that the dream of winning would soon become a reality, drastically transforming his life.
