Fears are growing as devastating wildfires continue to spread around Bordeaux in France, with a new heatwave forecast to peak at a scorching 41C. The massive fire in Gironde has already consumed 42,000 hectares since July 22, with authorities managing to stabilize it despite several flare-ups overnight.
Unfavorable weather conditions, including temperatures reaching up to 41C inland and 38C along the coast, are expected to fan the flames today. Dry winds with gusts of up to 45 km/h further escalate the risk. French authorities have evacuated an additional 4,000 people from tourist sites on the country’s Atlantic coast, marking one of the largest peacetime evacuations in France’s history. Over 220,000 individuals have been forced to leave their homes due to the Gironde fire.
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez revealed that 184 individuals have been arrested on suspicion of arson since the beginning of summer, emphasizing that the wildfire season is far from over. Meanwhile, in Spain, a national emergency has been declared due to wildfires in parts of Madrid and Ávila, leading to the evacuation of over 100,000 people.
AEMET, Spain’s weather agency, has warned of the country’s fourth heatwave of the year, with temperatures expected to soar to 42C in the north-east and 39C in the center. The agency emphasized the extreme wildfire risk due to high temperatures, gusty winds, and low humidity levels.
