“Alt-nets Outshine Major Providers in UK Broadband”

A recent report from consumer advocate Which? reveals that some of the major broadband providers in the UK are failing to meet customer expectations for reliable service. The report shows that smaller alternative networks, known as “alt-nets,” are surpassing the bigger brands by delivering faster speeds, more reliable connections, and better value for money.

The study highlights that issues with internet connections, such as frequent dropouts, are widespread among consumers. Slow download speeds and service outages are also common complaints among users.

An overwhelming 91% of broadband customers reported experiencing issues with their service in the past year, indicating that only a small percentage of households had a trouble-free connection.

Sky emerged as one of the worst performers in terms of frequent dropouts, with 38% of customers facing this issue. Virgin Media also struggled, with 30% of users experiencing regular connection dropouts despite paying high broadband bills.

Customers of Sky expressed dissatisfaction with slow broadband speeds, mirroring similar sentiments with other providers like TalkTalk and Sky’s NOW service.

On the contrary, smaller UK providers such as Zen Internet, Community Fibre, and Hyperoptic received positive feedback for offering more reliable services compared to larger brands. Plusnet stood out among the bigger providers, surpassing rivals like Vodafone, EE, BT, and Sky.

Which? emphasizes that smaller broadband firms consistently outperform major providers in terms of reliability, customer service, and value for money, urging households to consider switching to alternative providers if dissatisfied with their current service.

The study also provides a list of winners and losers based on customer ratings, with Zen leading the pack at 83%, followed by Hyperoptic, Community Fibre, and Plusnet among the top performers. Larger providers like Sky, TalkTalk, Virgin Media, and NOW received lower ratings.

Natalie Hitchins, Head of Home Products and Services at Which?, noted that larger providers have been disappointing customers for too long and emphasized the importance of quality broadband service in today’s digital age.

In response to the report, a Virgin Media spokesperson highlighted the company’s ongoing investments to enhance services and cited positive independent data ranking Virgin Media as a top performer across various broadband categories.

Overall, the findings underscore the growing importance of reliable broadband services and the need for consumers to explore alternative providers for better experiences.
