The Foreign Office has not yet issued a ‘do not travel’ advisory for the impacted zones, recommending that British travelers consult with their accommodation or package holiday providers for updates.
Experts highlight that without an official travel warning in place, individuals who independently cancel their holidays risk forfeiting their refund rights and insurance claims. ABTA, representing UK travel agents and operators, reassured that if a package holiday to a wildfire-affected area is disrupted, operators will offer alternative arrangements or full refunds.
For independently booked trips, it is essential to verify accommodation availability and refund policies to avoid jeopardizing travel insurance claims. Notable destinations in the affected Gironde region of France include Arcachon, Bordeaux, and Fontainebleau forest, while wildfire alerts are in place for tourist-favorite locations in Spain like Avila, Toledo, Valencia, and Castellon.
France and Spain remain top choices for British vacationers, with approximately 17.8 million visits to Spain and 9.3 million visits to France by UK residents in 2024. President Emmanuel Macron described the ongoing fires as France’s most severe fire-related crisis since World War II, attributing challenges to unprecedented weather conditions including pyrocumulonimbus clouds intensifying the flames.
