Rebecca Boren experienced a remarkable moment when she captured a heart-shaped lightning bolt over a beach recently. The 33-year-old woman managed to photograph the dramatic event at Cannon Beach, Oregon, on July 22. This lightning strike was among 8,357 strikes recorded in Oregon that day, contributing to wildfires in the region.
Reflecting on the event, Rebecca, who hails from Seattle, Washington, shared her experience of witnessing lightning at the beach for the first time. She mentioned using her phone to record the stormy afternoon and later noticing the heart-shaped lightning bolt in the footage.
While lightning can be captivating, it also poses significant dangers. Lightning occurs when negatively charged electrons in storm clouds seek to connect with the positive charge on the ground, generating an electric current. A single lightning bolt can heat the surrounding air up to 30,000 degrees Celsius, causing the familiar booming sound of thunder.
Despite its beauty, lightning can be lethal. Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention highlight that between 2006 and 2025, there were 517 lightning-related deaths in the US, with men being four times more likely to be struck than women. In the UK, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents reports one to two lightning-related deaths annually.
It is crucial to remember that while nature’s displays can be awe-inspiring, they also carry inherent risks.
