Raging wildfires have led to the evacuation of over 330,000 individuals in south-west France and eastern Spain, with the flames nearing the city of Bordeaux and its airport.
In France’s Gironde department, where Bordeaux is situated, an estimated 220,000 people have been forced to leave their homes. The airport’s hotel zone in Bordeaux has also been evacuated until further notice due to the wildfires.
Challenges have arisen from shifting winds and dry conditions, complicating efforts to contain the massive blaze that has been burning uncontrollably since last week. The fire has generated an extraordinary “pyrocumulonimbus” – a massive fire thunderstorm fueled by its own winds and lightning, as reported by the National Firefighters Federation of France.
In Spain, wildfires have ravaged areas around Madrid, leading to evacuations in the Valencia region. Approximately 15,000 individuals have been evacuated from the eastern coastal city, while over 90,000 have fled from regions near Madrid and Ávila. Tragically, a man lost his life in a wildfire in Manises, a suburb of Valencia, marking Spain’s first reported death in the recent fires.
The primary wildfire in south-west France is currently approximately nine miles away from the south of Bordeaux, which ranks as the sixth-most populous metropolitan area in France.
Despite the proximity of the blaze, Bordeaux Mayor Thomas Cazenave has stated that there are no immediate plans to evacuate the city’s population of around 850,000 residents.
French President Emmanuel Macron expressed gratitude to Pope Leo XIV for his show of solidarity with those impacted by the wildfires in France and Spain. During his Sunday Angelus prayer, the Pope mentioned the “devastating wildfires” in both countries and called for prayers for the affected individuals and the brave responders battling the blazes.
In response to a post by the Pope, Macron conveyed his thanks on social media, stating, “Most Holy Father, on behalf of the French people, thank you for your support.”

French President Emmanuel Macron is set to convene a crisis meeting this morning to address the wildfires advancing towards Bordeaux. The meeting, scheduled for 10am Paris time (9am BST) at the Ministry of the Interior, will include the presence of ministers of economy and trade.
Macron emphasized the need for France to “rebuild” and “repair” in the aftermath of the wildfires.
