Andy Burnham has shared that his pet dog, Axel, will not be making the journey between London and Manchester now that he is the Prime Minister. Axel, a bichon poo adopted in 2017, has been described by Burnham as having a feisty personality that might clash with Larry the cat at Downing Street.
As a result, Axel will remain in the north, but Burnham, who will be working from No10 North at least once a week, will still be able to spend quality time with his furry companion. Burnham humorously referred to Axel as “Famous Axel” when asked about his plans for the dog’s living arrangements.
In contrast to previous Prime Ministers who brought their pets to Downing Street, Burnham has decided to keep Axel up north due to concerns about potential conflicts with Larry. This decision has been deemed as one of the significant choices made in his new role.
Other notable political pets include Boris Johnson’s Jack Russell cross, Dilyn, known for his lively behavior, and Rishi Sunak’s well-behaved Labrador Retriever, Nova, who frequently appeared alongside her owner during his time as Prime Minister.
