Volodymyr Zelensky is set to make history by being the first global leader to meet with Andy Burnham during a crucial meeting in the UK scheduled for Monday.
The Ukrainian President is anticipated to join the Prime Minister at a British naval base, where Burnham will provide essential expertise to aid in the development of cutting-edge electronic jammers designed to counter Russian defense systems. This collaboration aims to enable Ukraine to manufacture a large quantity of these devices, known as Stone Cloak, to protect its drones from detection and targeting.
Burnham praised this technology as a prime example of innovative British ingenuity, emphasizing the unwavering support of Britain for Ukraine. The sharing of intellectual property for Stone Cloak by the UK government will be integrated into the next generation of British deep-strike capabilities, enhancing the UK’s new low-cost cruise missile program known as Project Brakestop. Additionally, thousands of these jammers have already been provided to Ukraine to support drone operations.
This strategic move by the UK is seen as a significant setback for Russia in its unlawful invasion of Ukraine led by Putin. During Zelensky’s visit, he and Burnham will interact with over 200 Ukrainian military personnel and sailors who have been undergoing training in the UK for the past three weeks.
The UK has previously pledged a yearly sum of £3 billion to Ukraine to assist in countering Russian aggression, totaling £25 billion in support since 2022.
In a separate development, Burnham expressed readiness to stand up to Donald Trump if it serves Britain’s national interests. He emphasized the importance of defending national interests and maintaining strong relationships with global leaders.
The new Defence Secretary, Wes Streeting, affirmed the UK’s stance on not supporting offensive actions in Iran while collaborating with the US on reopening the vital Strait of Hormuz, which has been disrupted due to recent hostilities.
Streeting highlighted the economic impacts of the strait’s closure and emphasized the joint efforts required to secure commercial shipping routes in the region.
In a bid to boost the domestic economy, the new Chancellor, John Healey, announced a “buy British” initiative within the UK government to prioritize British firms for procurement contracts and support local jobs and skills development.
The government’s commitment to bolstering British defense capabilities through domestic procurement is underscored by Healey’s previous success in awarding a majority of major defense contracts to British companies during his tenure as Defence Secretary. The government aims to increase defense spending to 3% of the UK’s GDP, although a specific timeline for this target has not been set.
