Water safety awareness has gained significant importance in recent times due to the rising temperatures driving people towards water bodies in the UK, resulting in a surge of drownings. World Drowning Prevention Day aims to raise awareness regarding this issue. This international event sheds light on the global drowning statistics, with the World Health Organisation estimating over 300,000 annual deaths due to water-related incidents, including around 328 cases from the UK and Ireland. Launched by the United Nations in 2021, World Drowning Prevention Day aims to reduce drowning fatalities by 35% by the year 2035.
The focus is on educating individuals about the risks associated with swimming or bathing in open water. As the Mirror launches its Save Lives For Sam campaign, the emphasis is on preventive measures to avoid water-related emergencies. While water activities are often associated with relaxation, they come with inherent risks, such as cold water shock, rip currents, tides, and waves.
Cold water shock, caused by entering water below 15°C, can lead to serious health issues, including heart attacks. Rip currents, fast-moving currents in open water, pose a danger to swimmers, especially near river mouths. Tides can unexpectedly cut off access to certain areas, and waves, particularly plunging and surging waves, can be hazardous to beachgoers.
To combat these risks, individuals are advised to gradually acclimate to cold water, swim parallel to rip currents, stay informed about tide levels, and avoid strong waves. The water safety code stresses the importance of understanding potential hazards, entering water cautiously, and refraining from using inflatables in open water. The RNLI’s Float to Live campaign provides guidance on floating in deep water to prevent drowning incidents.
Emergency situations should prompt a call to the emergency services rather than attempting a risky rescue. The Save Lives For Sam campaign advocates for water safety lessons in schools, a public awareness drive, enhanced lifesaving equipment, Sam’s Law, and a dedicated Water Safety Minister to address the escalating drowning problem in the UK.
