Local residents living near a beach where a mother and daughter tragically drowned during a day trip have expressed their concerns, labeling the incident as an inevitable tragedy. Samiha Rahman, 15, and her mother Shally Rahman, 41, both from Ilford, London, lost their lives after encountering difficulties at West Mersea Beach on Mersea Island, Essex, on a fateful Wednesday evening.
According to a family friend, the mother and daughter were not proficient swimmers and were merely enjoying a day out at the seaside. Essex Police received a distress call from the ambulance service at 5:35 pm on Wednesday reporting multiple individuals struggling in the water.
Authorities have confirmed that the mother and daughter were attempting to assist a seven-year-old family member who is currently in critical condition at a hospital. Two additional individuals were successfully rescued from the scene.
This tragic incident follows a previous drowning in 2023 and years of community apprehension regarding the adequacy of safety precautions and warnings along the beach. Witnesses recounted that the group was stranded on a sandbank when the tide swiftly rose, submerging several people in water.
A relative of Shally Rahman, Matiur Rahman, recounted how approximately ten family members were near the water playing when a sudden large wave swept over them, leaving everyone in shock and disbelief.
Local bystanders rushed to aid the distressed family upon hearing commotion on the beach. Several individuals, including a man who pulled multiple people from the water and a group of three teenage waitresses, were among the first responders at the scene.
The heroic actions of Leonie Powling, 19, and her 18-year-old friend Keira French, who were part of the waitress group, were praised by Seaview Beach Diner owner Melanie Shuker. She described how the girls reacted promptly to the cries for help and assisted in the rescue efforts, handling a distressing situation with commendable composure.
Moreover, Melissa French, another café worker, highlighted the long-standing concerns of residents regarding the lack of adequate signage and life-saving equipment at West Mersea Beach. She emphasized the urgent need for improved safety measures to prevent further tragedies caused by unsuspecting hazards in the area.
In response to the incident, a spokesperson for Colchester Council clarified that decisions on water safety measures are based on professional risk assessments and advice from specialized organizations. The council had recently conducted an independent beach risk assessment which did not recommend the installation of public rescue equipment at the assessed area of West Mersea beach due to various factors affecting its effectiveness in emergencies.
