An Italian sports journalist may have been fatally burned, according to ongoing investigations into his tragic demise. Luigi ‘Luca’ Esposito was reported missing after failing to respond to calls from friends. Authorities suspect the attack occurred before midnight. His charred remains were found at a secluded field in Salerno, Italy, after firefighters were called to extinguish a blaze.
Esposito, 53, typically communicated with colleagues about article headlines but abruptly stopped. His last WhatsApp activity was noted at 10:47 pm. His car keys were located near his body, but his mobile phone was missing. Initially thought to have been shot before being set on fire, an autopsy indicated uncertainty about whether he was alive during the burning, with a 50% likelihood.
Further tests, including histological and toxicological analyses, are pending and can take up to two months. The autopsy was conducted by coroner Giovanni Casaburi, with Esposito’s family consultant, Giuseppe Raimo, present. Due to severe burns, identification of the body was initially challenging until the car keys matched Esposito’s.
Investigations suggest Esposito arrived at a rural area in Salerno around 11 pm in his white Lancia car, based on CCTV footage. He left his vehicle on foot, presumably to meet someone. The autopsy revealed injuries consistent with a severe beating, including head trauma and fractures to his pelvis, face, and ribs.
Contrary to initial reports of gunshot wounds, no bullets were found in his body. It is speculated that the fractures could have resulted from intense heat during the burning. Authorities in Salerno are treating the case as a murder, with top anti-mafia chief Raffaele Cantone overseeing the probe.
Esposito resided in the Camorra syndicate stronghold of Salerno, known for its deep-rooted mafia influence. Despite being described as a peaceful individual with no known enemies, investigations into his personal and professional life are ongoing. He was a fervent fan of Salernitana 1919 and actively involved in sports journalism, appearing on various media platforms.
The mystery surrounding Esposito deepened when claims of his employment at the Campania Regional Environmental Protection Agency (ARPAC) were refuted. ARPAC denied any association with him, stating he had no employment or managerial ties with the agency. Alleged memberships in professional organizations were also debunked posthumously.
Police have not made any arrests, and the investigation into Esposito’s tragic death continues.
