More than 100 millionaires based in the UK, including former Match of the Day host Gary Lineker, have signed a letter urging new Prime Minister Andy Burnham to introduce a tax on their wealth. The initiative, led by Patriotic Millionaires UK, advocates for increased taxes on the wealthiest individuals in the UK, rather than on regular workers.
Andy Burnham has expressed support for a wealth tax in the past, suggesting that the government may need to seek additional contributions from the richest individuals. The proposal by Patriotic Millionaires and Tax Justice UK recommends a 2% annual tax on wealth exceeding £10 million, affecting approximately 20,000 individuals in the UK, which is less than 0.04% of the population.
Gary Lineker, one of the signatories to the letter alongside 120 other millionaires, emphasized the importance of supporting the country for a more equitable society. He stressed the value of paying a fair share, noting that many ordinary citizens already contribute more than they can afford. Lineker called for the government to raise taxes on extreme wealth levels to foster a fairer and more hopeful Britain.
When questioned about a potential wealth tax in an interview with the former footballer, Andy Burnham did not dismiss the idea, emphasizing the need for fairness and transparency in governance. Wes Streeting, the newly appointed Defence Secretary, had previously advocated for a similar wealth tax, describing it as an effective measure.
