A police officer is set to appear in court facing charges of causing death by dangerous driving almost a year after a 16-year-old boy lost his life in a tragic e-bike accident. Daniel Cartwright, 31, was not on duty when the collision occurred at 10:10 am on Sunday, September 28, 2025, involving two cars and an e-bike on Chilwell Lane in Bramcote, Nottinghamshire. The victim, Ryley Hutson, was declared deceased at the scene, prompting emergency response efforts, including an air ambulance landing nearby.
After nearly 10 months, Nottinghamshire Police announced that Mr. Cartwright, a serving officer with Bedfordshire Police, has been formally accused of causing death by dangerous driving. Scheduled to face magistrates in Nottingham on August 6, 2026, Mr. Cartwright resides in Kettering, Northamptonshire.
Following the incident, a GoFundMe campaign was launched by Ryley’s aunt, who fondly described the teenager as vibrant and loving. Expressing the family’s devastation, she emphasized Ryley’s impact on everyone who knew him.
Initially, a 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and later released on police bail pending further inquiries. Detective Inspector Jamie Moore from Nottinghamshire Police expressed condolences to Ryley’s family, acknowledging the profound impact of the tragic event on their lives.
An inquest led by coroner Amanda Bewley at Nottingham Coroner’s Court on December 2 began investigating the circumstances of Ryley’s death. During the hearing, the coroner disclosed that preliminary findings from a post-mortem examination identified chest injuries as the likely cause of death.
