Specialist law enforcement officers dedicated to combating organized crime have played a key role in apprehending over a thousand individuals suspected of engaging in predatory behavior, particularly targeting sexual offenses. Employing strategies typically utilized in apprehending high-level criminal figures, these officers have successfully apprehended 1,393 suspects, safeguarded 1,351 children, and secured prison sentences totaling 1,487 years.
Regional organized crime units (ROCUs) have expanded their focus beyond traditional criminal activities like drug trafficking, violence, money laundering, and firearms offenses to prioritize the protection of vulnerable individuals within society.
Recent convictions include Declan Sains, 28, who received an eight-year and three-month prison sentence for engaging in sexual communication with a child and other related offenses. Similarly, Rhys Meikle, 31, was sentenced to four years in prison for committing child sexual offenses and distributing indecent images.
Chief Constable Trevor Rodenhurst, the lead for ROCUs, emphasized the evolving nature of organized crime, with offenders increasingly leveraging digital platforms to target vulnerable populations. He highlighted the importance of adapting law enforcement tactics and technologies to effectively combat these evolving threats.
Deputy Chief Constable Wendy Gunney, the lead for national SOC, underscored the crucial role of identifying and safeguarding victims of exploitation and coercion by organized criminals. She praised the effectiveness of ROCU tactics in combating serious organized crime and expressed confidence in their ability to contribute significantly to efforts against violence targeting women and children.
Since their establishment in 2013, ROCUs have grown into a national network comprising approximately 4,000 officers and staff. Working in collaboration with the National Crime Agency (NCA), these units have made significant strides in arresting suspects, securing prison sentences, protecting vulnerable individuals, and seizing illicit substances and firearms.
ROCUs have confiscated a substantial amount of firearms, ammunition, and illegal drugs, including cocaine, heroin, and cannabis, demonstrating their impact in disrupting organized criminal activities.
