MI5, the UK’s security service, recommended that Members of Parliament construct secure safe rooms in their homes to deter potential intruders. The National Protective Security Authority (NPSA), a division of the country’s intelligence and security agency, advised public figures, including MPs, councillors, and dissidents, to establish a designated “safer area” where they can seek refuge if targeted by hostile individuals.
In addition to creating a bulletproof and secure space, the guidance proposed the installation of fog machines as a deterrent. Safe rooms, also known as panic rooms, are concealed spaces installed in homes to provide protection and prevent forced entry by intruders.
These secure spaces may include features such as bulletproof glass, security walls, steel panels, security cameras, and emergency communication devices. While some properties may already have safe rooms, others can be retrofitted with high-security specifications.
The NPSA also recommended implementing additional security measures, such as timed lighting to give the impression of occupancy when the property is unattended, and trimming back foliage to reduce potential hiding spots around the property.
The guidance from NPSA was issued three months prior to the untimely death of Ann Widdecombe, a former Conservative MP and Reform spokeswoman. Widdecombe, a prominent public figure who later served as an MEP for the Brexit Party and appeared on television shows like Strictly Come Dancing and Celebrity Big Brother, was found deceased at her remote residence in Haytor Vale, Devon, following a targeted attack.
A 28-year-old man from Rotherham, South Yorkshire, was arrested in connection with Widdecombe’s murder, with additional suspicions of involvement in acts of terrorism. The incident has prompted discussions on enhancing security measures for MPs, with incoming Prime Minister Andy Burnham emphasizing the need for a review of current security arrangements in light of the tragic event. Burnham expressed concern over the evolving atmosphere in political discourse, citing a shift towards increased hostility and toxicity.
