In a shocking incident, a hospital worker in northern Brazil, who falsely claimed to be pregnant, allegedly tried to abduct a newborn baby from a maternity hospital. The nursing technician, Auricelia de Sousa Rocha, was apprehended after surveillance footage from Evangelina Rosa Maternity Hospital revealed her walking with the infant.
According to the baby’s aunt, Daniela Beatriz, Rocha approached the new mother post-delivery, stating that the baby required a heel prick test. Beatriz recounted accompanying Rocha to another floor as instructed, while the mother remained in her room. Subsequently, Rocha changed her attire, attempted to exit the premises with the baby concealed in a bag, but was intercepted.
CCTV footage depicted Rocha, dressed in scrubs, carrying a black bag with the baby wrapped in a red blanket. Another clip showed Rocha in a black dress with a bag, before being confronted and halted by a vigilant individual.
The aunt expressed disbelief at Rocha’s actions, who had purportedly prepared a baby room at her residence despite never proving her pregnancy to her family. Rocha’s legal counsel cited her diagnosis of schizophrenic symptoms, suggesting impairment in comprehending the gravity of the situation. However, authorities maintained that mental health issues would not absolve her of accountability for the alleged abduction attempt.
