Passengers aboard a Ryanair flight heading to the UK feared for their lives when they were unexpectedly jolted into the plane’s ceiling during intense mid-air turbulence.
The flight, FR 9887, was initially set to depart Alicante at 4:35 pm on July 10 with Liverpool John Lennon Airport as its destination. However, due to the severity of the turbulence causing injuries to several individuals, the aircraft had to be rerouted to Nantes, France, as confirmed by the airline.
An eyewitness recounted the harrowing experience as the flight eventually took off at 6:05 pm, with passengers and cabin crew being violently pushed into the ceiling, resulting in chaotic scenes of screaming and tears. The turbulence was described as unprecedented, with the plane suddenly dropping, causing panic among passengers.
Passengers struggled to stay grounded, holding onto each other to prevent hitting the roof as the turbulence continued. The atmosphere inside the cabin was described as terrifying, with passengers fearing for their lives amid the chaos. Some passengers were left injured, with one requiring a stretcher due to hitting the ceiling.
Following the turbulent ordeal, the passengers were temporarily held in the departure lounge before being transferred to Liverpool John Lennon Airport on a replacement aircraft. The scene at the lounge was chaotic, with passengers covered in spilled beverages and some sustaining minor injuries.
A spokesperson for Ryanair addressed the incident, stating that Flight FR9887 encountered turbulence mid-flight, leading to the diversion and safe landing at Nantes Airport. A few passengers received medical attention, and a replacement aircraft was arranged to transport passengers to Liverpool at 12:20 am local time.
The incident highlights the unpredictability of air travel and the importance of safety measures during flights to ensure the well-being of passengers and crew.
