“Digital Passenger Cards Streamline Arrival for Tourists in Australia”

Tourists from the UK and other countries vacationing in a popular destination no longer need to complete paper passenger cards upon arrival. Instead, travelers arriving at Australian airports will now fill out digital cards. These cards are mandatory for both visitors and residents entering the country.

Over 450,000 passengers have already tested the digital-only cards on Qantas flights arriving in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane since October 2024. The initiative is set to expand to Qantas flights to Perth and Adelaide by the end of 2026 and will eventually be implemented at all international airports and seaports within the next 12 to 18 months.

Initially accessible through a webpage, the digital form is expected to evolve with industry collaboration to include in-app functionality. The government has reported positive feedback from the trial, citing significant success in simplifying and expediting the arrival process for visitors.

Tourism Minister Don Farrell emphasized that streamlining arrivals will allow tourists to spend more time enjoying Australia’s attractions rather than filling out paperwork, benefiting both visitors and local tourism businesses. The implementation of the program will be financed through a $56.1 million investment over four years.

This initiative aims to enhance efficiency and reduce manual processing for passengers, enabling the collection of digital information in advance and improving data quality for risk evaluations. Additionally, it will support updates and management of global risks, including biosecurity concerns.

Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke stressed that this modernization is crucial for Australia’s prosperity and national security, providing a seamless border process that aligns with today’s digital lifestyle. The funding for the program is also expected to enhance airport and cruise departure procedures, especially with the anticipated increase in travelers leading up to the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games.
