“Expert Urges Travelers: Secure Free GHIC Card Before European Trip”

Traveling to Europe this summer? Before embarking on your journey, financial expert Martin Lewis recommends that every traveler should possess a specific card in their wallet that could lead to cost savings, as per the Money Saving Expert report.

Lewis emphasized the significance of obtaining the UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) as a precautionary measure for potential emergencies while abroad. The GHIC facilitates access to state healthcare services in numerous European nations; nevertheless, Lewis underlined that it should not serve as a substitute for travel insurance.

During the National Money Assembly at St Charles 6th Form College in London, Lewis advised individuals planning a trip to Europe to secure a GHIC before departing the UK. He highlighted that the card is entirely free and cautioned against paying any third-party website for the application process.

“If you are heading to Europe, always ensure you have your GHIC card, which provides access to treatment in a state-run hospital in an EU country or equivalent at local costs,” Lewis stated. He further explained that individuals can visit a general practitioner with the GHIC if locals receive GP services without charge.

The NHS specifies that the GHIC covers essential healthcare services during temporary stays in the EU and select other countries. However, it does not include private medical treatments, mountain rescues, repatriation to the UK, or expenses like lost or stolen belongings.

To mitigate risks, Martin Lewis advises against relying solely on the GHIC and suggests arranging travel insurance promptly upon booking a trip. He highlighted that basic travel insurance for a young traveler spending a week in Europe could be as affordable as £7 to £10, emphasizing the importance of obtaining coverage.

Lewis advocates for purchasing travel insurance “ASAB” – as soon as booking, as policies can safeguard against trip cancellations due to unforeseen circumstances. The GHIC applications are available free of charge through the official NHS website, with online application options accessible to most individuals. Lewis cautioned against using fee-charging websites as the card itself is obtainable at no cost.
