“New DNA Samples Collected in Russell Murder Case”

Levi Bellfield is under scrutiny for the hammer murders of Lin and Megan Russell as authorities plan to collect a new DNA sample from him. The notorious criminal previously admitted to the brutal attack on Lin, 45, her daughter Megan, six, and their surviving daughter Josie, then nine, back in 1996. A review of the case by the Criminal Cases Review Commission involves obtaining an updated DNA sample from Bellfield, who is currently incarcerated at HMP Frankland.

The investigation follows Michael Stone, who was initially convicted of the murders, providing a fresh DNA sample to the team. Stone, now 66 and also in HMP Frankland, was arrested following a TV appeal and convicted based on a disputed cell confession in 1998.

Bellfield, already serving a life sentence for other murders, had previously confessed to the Russell killings but later retracted his statement. Efforts to corroborate his claims have been unsuccessful, and he has a history of falsely admitting to crimes he did not commit.

The collection of new DNA samples aims to utilize advanced testing techniques to reexamine the evidence. Any potential DNA found at the crime scene could be compared to Bellfield’s. The same methods were instrumental in proving the innocence of Andrew Malkinson, who was wrongfully imprisoned for 17 years.

Recent developments also highlight a forensic strategy focused on analyzing samples from the crime scene, particularly bloodstained items and tapings from the victims’ bodies that have not been retested since 1996. Stone, who maintains his innocence, was identified as a suspect after a televised appeal but cannot recall his whereabouts during the attack.

Bellfield reportedly confessed to the Russell murders during discussions with prison psychologists. The ongoing investigation aims to shed light on the truth behind these heinous crimes.
