A man labeled a “predator” for attempting to sexually assault a woman near Buckingham Palace has been sentenced to seven years and three months in prison. The incident occurred as the victim was leaving St James’s Park in central London on the early morning of September 7, 2024. The perpetrator, Ramzi Barkat, 54, pursued the woman, made advances that she rebuffed, and then physically attacked her, as described by Judge Justin Cole at Southwark Crown Court.
Barkat’s actions were thwarted by the timely intervention of three courageous young soldiers who heard the woman’s cries for help. The judge commended their bravery. Despite the conviction, Judge Cole criticized the police for a series of mishandlings in the case, noting that Barkat had been released on bail or under investigation following the initial incident, which he deemed as a grave error.
The judge expressed disappointment in the police’s handling of the situation, stating that Barkat had been allowed to roam freely for a year despite being apprehended in the act. Barkat, originally from Algeria, was found guilty of attempted rape and assaulting one of the soldiers who intervened. He denied the charges, claiming he had only intended to steal the woman’s phone.
As part of his sentencing, Barkat was issued a 10-year sexual harm prevention order and a 10-year restraining order. Additionally, the judge announced his intention to nominate the brave soldiers for the High Sheriff Bravery Awards in recognition of their heroic actions.
