An ally of the United States has provided fresh intelligence suggesting a new Iranian plot to assassinate President Donald Trump.
The information was shared with the US by Israel, as per sources familiar with the situation cited by the Wall Street Journal.
Iran has long threatened retaliation against the US following the assassination of Qassem Soleimani, a senior general in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, during Trump’s first term.
Tensions escalated into a full-scale conflict after joint US and Israeli strikes on key Iranian targets on February 28.
According to the WSJ, the White House directed attention to comments made by Trump on Wednesday.
During discussions in Türkiye with the media, Trump hinted at threats to his life, stating, “They are aiming to eliminate me, the US leader.”
He added, “I am a target on all their lists. This morning I saw my name on every single one of their lists. I have been fortunate so far, but that luck may not hold for long.”
Following the US-Israeli strikes that led to the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei at the conflict’s outset, Iranians mourned and some demonstrators displayed a banner reading “We Will Kill Trump.”
On June 17, the US and Iran agreed to a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at ending the war within 60 days.
Efforts were being made to reach a lasting peace deal between Washington and Tehran to resolve the conflict, ensure safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, and address the ongoing dispute over Iran’s nuclear program.
However, Trump declared the ceasefire to be terminated during a NATO summit in Türkiye on Wednesday, stating, “I have no interest in further engagement with them. They are despicable.”
